About this wallet

The wallet built into Southeast Asia's Grab super-app, accepted across hawker centres, supermarkets, retail, rides, delivery, bills and SGQR QR payments in Singapore.

!Not a bank. GrabPay in Singapore holds a Major Payment Institution licence from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and issues e-money. Balances are not bank deposits and are not deposit-insured.

Can foreigners or tourists open it?

It works in two layers. Tourists can download Grab, register with their home or Singapore number and bind an international Visa/Mastercard for rides and food delivery — that is card payment, not wallet balance. To use the GrabPay wallet balance for offline QR payments you must pass KYC: residents and pass holders verify instantly via Singpass; foreigners without Singpass must upload a passport, proof of address and a face scan, which takes about 1–3 working days with mixed success.

Advantages

  • Rides, delivery, groceries, courier and QR payments in one app
  • SGQR coverage is near universal at hawker centres and retail
  • Works with an international credit card, so tourists need not pre-load

Limitations

  • Wallet-balance KYC is strict; tourists without Singpass often fail verification
  • Singapore caps e-wallet balances at S$5,000 by law
  • Balances are country-specific — you must reload separately in each market

What you need

  • A Singapore or other Grab-market mobile number
  • Passport
  • Proof of address (hotel bill or tenancy) for manual review
  • A Visa/Mastercard credit or debit card
