About this wallet

Tencent's locally operated HKD wallet, separate from the mainland WeChat Pay account. It settles in HKD at merchants in Hong Kong, mainland China, Macao and Japan, and supports FPS transfers and digital red packets.

!Not a bank. WeChat Pay HK is an HKMA-licensed stored value facility under Hong Kong's SVF Ordinance. The HKD wallet balance is not a bank deposit and is not covered by any deposit protection scheme.

Can foreigners or tourists open it?

A Hong Kong (+852) phone number is required to unlock the HKD wallet. Activation can be done in one of four ways: verify a HK mobile number, bind a Hong Kong-issued Visa/Mastercard/UnionPay credit card, bind a supported Hong Kong bank account, or complete real-name verification with a HKID. Short-stay tourists without a HK number or HKID generally cannot open it — use mainland WeChat Pay with an international card instead, or pay in the mainland via Alipay+ partner wallets. The HKD wallet works in Hong Kong, mainland China, Macao and selected merchants in Japan.

Advantages

  • HKD settlement works locally and cross-border (mainland, Macao, Japan)
  • Supports FPS and cross-border remittance, free and available 24/7
  • Scan-to-pay at tens of millions of mainland merchants — ideal for Hong Kong residents travelling north

Limitations

  • A Hong Kong mobile number is mandatory, so short-stay tourists are effectively locked out
  • Paying from the balance requires identity verification with a HKID
  • Only Hong Kong-issued cards and bank accounts are accepted
